Music Rage

March 8, 2006

Why do we get so upset when someone disses our music?

For example, you love Lynard Skynard or Nice and Smooth and some one says one the aforementioned performers sucks. You feel that little pang in your heart like someone just said something rude about you personally.

Maybe it's a testament to how powerful music is. Maybe we consider our favorite songs to be represent a part of who we are. And when someone takes a shot at Chumbawamba we can't help feeling a little hurt ourselves.

For some reason other media doesnt seem to elicit the same response. You don't like Lost? Who cares. You didn't watch Empire Strikes Back twenty times. Good, you were probably making the world a better place while I watched At-Ats attack the rebel base on Hoth for the umpteen time.

What say ye? Do you agree, is music an outward extension of who we think of ourselves as?

BTW, Chumbawamba blows! Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

I never get defensive if someone doesn’t like my music, but I do tend to see the person who says “that music sucks” as narrow minded. If someone said “I don’t like Chumbawumba”, I can respect that, but not “it sucks”.

    For the record….Chumbawumba does suck.
