Shotgun: Rules of Engagement

April 8, 2006

Paul Davidson has written a most excellent post on calling shotgun at his blog, Words for My Enjoyment. The main focus of the post is a defense for still calling shotgun in adult life. I concur wholeheartedly and I believe it may even be a constitutional right of some sort (our forefathers thought of everything). I once even called shotgun on my parents and my poor mom was forced to ride in the back of the car.

He also reviews the rules of calling shotgun and all I have to add is the secondary no bitch seat call. This only comes into play when riding in a car with five (or more) people. After shotgun is called by one of your fellow travelers your only recourse is to call no bitch. This call guarantees you a window seat and makes sure one of your slower, less savvy companions gets the middle of the back seat; sandwiched between two sweaty, spread-legged dudes.

Calling shotgun just makes traveling by automobile much more civilized.
