There and back again, the Hobbit movie.

September 11, 2006

It looks like the film version of The Hobbit is in the works.

Over the next few years, MGM is planning to release half a dozen films, some in the $150 million to $200 million-plus range. Studio is ready to unveil such high-profile projects as “Terminator 4″; one or two installments of “The Hobbit,” which Sloan hopes will be directed by Peter Jackson; and a sequel to “The Thomas Crown Affair” with Pierce Brosnan.

The only thing I don’t like about that paragrapgh is that MGM “hopes” Jackson will helm The Hobbit. He better do it!

The Hobbit is my favorite book and one of the few books I have gone back to read several times. If they can’t do the film right at least let the cartoon stand as the “movie” version and leave it alone.

I also found this teaser poster for the movie and it looks pretty awesome (I’m saying it like Chris Farley). I wait with tempered excitement for more news about the flick.

Man, I’m a nerd.

UPDATE: EW.com has an interview with Peter Jackson about the Hobbit and other projects. It looks like he is interested in doing the Hobbit movie, but no one has asked him yet.

Looks like Jackson is not directing the Hobbit movie according to this EW.com article. There is still a small chance though …

Finally, some good news. Yes, Jackson did say he is now focusing on The Lovely Bones, which is due to begin shooting next year. But everyone from TheOneRing-ers to trilogy star Ian McKellen is publicly lobbying for him to make the movie. ”I should have relished revisiting Middle-earth with Peter again as team leader,” McKellen wrote on his website. ”I am hoping that New Line, MGM, and Wingnut can settle outstanding problems.” Then there’s MGM, which may be the most optimistic party of all. ”We support Peter Jackson as a filmmaker, and when the dust settles, we believe he’ll be making the movie,” said a rep for the studio. ”We can’t imagine any other result.” It’s safe to say that they speak for millions — a fact Jackson is no doubt hoping will be very hard for New Line to ignore.

I also forgot to mention that the poster is most likely a fake, but cool none the less.

    More news

In the latest comment in the controversy surrounding a proposed movie based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, New Line head Robert Shaye told SCI FI Wire in no uncertain terms that the studio won’t work with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson on that film or any other film. Ever. At least not as long as Shaye is in charge.

  4. Peter Jackson Says:

You bastard. That movie poster you created is a pile of shit. It’s called the HOBBIT and you’ve duplicated Gimli. A dwarf. Dumbass.

You stupid short fat kid. Go back to your hole.

  5. Peter Jackson Says:

Oh wait. You didn’t make it. Sorry.

    Buy my book!

  6. Bilbo Baggins Says:

That poster is absolute piss. You should find the man who made it and kill him. It is a total injustice to my memory and tales of adventure.

    Love, Uncle Bilbo.

  7. Guy Says:

Glad you could stop by uncle bilbo

  8. Nate Says:

Petey and Bilbo seem a little highstrung…

It would definitely be cool if Jackson could direct The Hobbit, but more than anything, I hope McKellan does Gandalf. If they settle for someone else it just won’t be the same. I wish he could have played Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies too. Sir Richard Harris was good, but I’m not that crazy about Michael Gambon.

  9. Guy Says:

Some of my friends who are harry potter fans were saying the exact same thing about Gambon just a couple days ago.

  10. Harry-Legolas Says:

I tottaly agree but i heard they were chosing between the guy for saruman and Gambon but they chose Gambon. It would have been way better for someone with wizard experince!!!!!

  11. Gimwald Says:

I’m really looking forward to this myself!

Looks like peace has been made

Word is flying fast & furious: Team Jackson, New Line, and MGM have made nice and are gearing up to launch 2 HOBBIT movies.

One will be an adaptaion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s THE HOBBIT. The second project is believed to be a bridge between THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy - culled from the titanic amount of periphery/ancillary/notated material found in Tolkien’s works. Such material can already be seen in the exiting films.

Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will Executive Produce; no word on whether Jackson will direct just yet.
