Will my son like my movies?

April 29, 2007

My wife and son rented the Muppet Movie on a recent trip to the library. I must admit I was siked that he picked (with his mom’s help) out a flick from my childhood (it came out in ‘79).

We have been watching it for the last couple of days and he seems to like it as much as any of his other DVDs. Since he’s only 22 months old we haven’t actually watched it all the way through, but he seems excited to see Kermit, Fozzie, and the rest of the Muppet crew.

This got me thinking about the movies from my youth and whether my son will like them when he’s old enough to appreciate them.

  • Will he like seeing a band of midgets battle an evil wizard in Time Bandits?
  • Will Jim Henson’s other puppet movie, The Dark Crystal, be cool enough to hold it’s own against the special effect monsters of today.
  • Will he think enough of the original Star Wars to re-create the light saber battles when he’s playing in the backyard.
  • Will he like Raiders of the Lost Ark enough to be Indiana Jones for Halloween?
  • Will he want his own alien after seeing E.T. – the Extra-Terrestrial?

I suppose it doesn’t really matter and that he will have his own favorite movies that remind him of his childhood. I just think it would be cool to share a small piece of my childhood with him and hope that he will dig it. Out of all my favorites my money is on Time Bandits, everyone loves time traveling, midget burglars, right?

OMG! I haven’t thought of Time Bandits in AGES! I know this is totally un PC of me, but midgets scare me. It’s a long story that involves a midget outside of Mann’s Chinese Theatre.

Anyway, I have a son who’s 15 this Friday and he likes all these movies…so there’s hope for yours. :)

  2. I’m glad to hear that about your son, it gives me hope. And I would love to hear your phobia inducing story some time!

  3. a word to the wise here… when you watch Pee Wee’s Big Adventure with your Little Man, don’t forget about Large Marge. It has been a year, and I still here about it from my 10, 8, and 6 year-old… Sadly, they never made it to the basement of the Alamo, and I don’t know that they ever will.

    Good advice. Large Marge=Very Scary
