We were hanging out at my mother-in-law’s crib not long ago and my wife brought out some of her old toys for our son to play with. The main item she unearthed was a large box of Legos. Inscribed on the outside of the box was the following warning:
[Insert name of my lovely wife here]’s Legos, No one elses.
Inside the Legos where nicely organized by type of piece. Doors, windows, and other related building pieces in one bag. Lego people heads, hats, and other body parts in another plastic baggie. But don’t think for a minute that the extensive organizational scheme meant that they were not played with.
The pieces showed the wear and tear of many an adventure. The white pieces were dis-colored like old parchment. The Lego men and women were faceless from year’s of use. The tires on the Lego ambulance were worn and muddy.
I examined this amazing set of Legos and realized that my wife is a closet geek. You wouldn’t think geek if you looked at her because she is beautiful, always put together, and so down to earth. But she let her inner geek flag fly as she laid on the floor and played Legos with our son. For a moment I could see the little girl that used to play with those Legos and it reminded me of myself and my Legos (which are still in a toy box in my parent’s basement).
I wondered if we would have played Legos together if we had lived on the same block growing-up. Would she know that the little boy me had a crush on the little girl her. Maybe I would have thrown a rock at her, chased her around with dog poo on a stick, or some other juvenile thing little boys do to girls they like.
As I watched my wife and son play Legos I added closet geek to long list of things I love about my wife.
Maybe this post will make up for me using her deodorant the other morning
Love ya honey!

You should do a workshop for men on how to show their wives how much they love them. This post was so lovely.

This was an incredible post. Well written and captivating! Thanks for the inspiration. I’ll file it in my “get-out-of-the-doghouse” mental file. Keep it up!
