Them: Adventures with Extremists by Jon Ronson is about the author’s journey to meet and greet with many of the world’s premier madmen and purveyors of conspiracy theories. During his research he discovers that these extremists have one belief in common: that a tiny elite group, which meets in secret, determines the course of global events.
I have always loved indulging in the fun that is conspiracy theories. Maybe because my formative years were spent digesting tin foil hat laden chunks of pop culture like the X-Files or JFK. If you are like me in that regard then this book will be right up your dark and mysterious alley.
I actually learned some interesting conspiracy factoids from Them. For example, I didn’t know that the Bilderberg Group, the secret cabal that “rules” the world, actually exists. Plus, Ronson supplies a first hand account of what goes on in the secret playground of the rich and powerful, Bohemian Grove.
Ronson is also great at becoming a fly on the wall and providing an often hilarious look into the day to day lives of extremists. For example, he relays a conversation between two members of the KKK as they discuss the care and maintenance of their robes (e.g. not taking them to a dry cleaners because the non-white employees will “loose” their sacred garments).
The book can also be pretty scary when the occasional extremist or bodyguard doesn’t take kindly to Ronson’s presence. He is almost pummeled by white supremacists near Ruby Ridge while trying to interview their leader. He is also chased by nondescript men in dark sunglasses after he tries to spy on a Bilderberg meeting.
