There’s nothing to see here.

February 18, 2008

Just a friendly reminder that I have moved to new digs. Come check me out at guy.tumblr.com (RSS feed).

I’m moving.

January 14, 2008

I have started to blog on guy.tumblr.com. It’s actually almost identical to what I do here (share interesting links I find and photos I take).

I hope that if you followed The Short Fat Kid you will continue to follow me at my new blog (subscribe.

Disconnected and oddly intimate.

January 7, 2008

And every time I see how many people are out there, sitting in their houses, reading the blogs of complete strangers and cheering them on, I realize again what a strangely disconnected and oddly intimate thing a blog is.

Twitter as a blog discovery tool.

January 6, 2008

twitter sidebarIf you’re looking for a way to surf an almost endless stream of blogs look no further than Twitter. Most of Twitter’s membership are also bloggers and with Twitter’s social networking aspect you can easily jump from one Twitter profile to the next.

  • Start by picking an interesting Twitter’er like Biz, Scoble, or Darth Vader.
  • Check out who the Twitter member is following by taking a gander at the “Following” widget located in the right-hand sidebar of their page (see screenshot on the right).
  • Then click on one of the Twitter icons that looks interesting to you. It amazes me how much one can convey in a little tiny icon (iou beer may be my favorite).
  • After clicking on an icon look at the Twitter member’s profile (again with screenshot on the right) under the “About” heading. If they have a blog/site it will be listed under “Web”.
  • What I usually do is open the link in a new tab and click on another icon from that person’s Following widget. I keep skipping from one Twitter profile to the next opening blogs up as I go until I have five or so fresh new blog’s for me to peruse.

Twitter’s simple interface makes profile surfing a snap and with an average of 2,000 new Twitter members a day there is a lot of potential blogs to discover.

New Sci-Fi blog launches.

January 2, 2008

Gawker Media has spewed forth their newest blog

We’re thrilled to announce a new member of the family this morning: our sister site io9 is everything and anything you want to know about science fiction, futurism, space, comics, hackers, science, and all manner of geeky culture.

Sounds kind of odd for Gawker to launch a Sci-Fi blog, but then again Sci-Fi content in starting to plunge into the mainstream and therefore means potential dividends for all those who embrace it.

P.S. This io9 chart on post-apocalyptic movies is purty fun.

Why blog?

December 30, 2007

Somewhere there is something that you find interesting, wonderful and beautiful. So please please tell us why so we can discover it too.

Cab driving blogger.

December 11, 2007

I ran across this blog by a cab driver in San Francisco and thought I would share. It’s loaded with interesting posts about life as a cabbie. Like this one from Turkey Day detailing cab riders and the Thanksgiving bounty they carried with them:

I took a male nurse to work at the Kaiser. He brought an entire cooked turkey for his coworkers who had to work Thanksgiving evening. What a nice guy.

2 ladies brought side dishes and a bunch of pie from the Mission to the Lower Haight.

I took a gay guy to the outer Mission for Thanksgiving dinner with some friends. He had just stopped to pick up the most important Thanksgiving ingredient for the group — vodka.

3 gay guys brought a turkey across town from the Tendernob to the Castro.

Yuppies from Russian Hill took wine and pie up to Twin Peaks.

A gal that just broke up with her bf took some side dishes and wine to friends in the Sunset from the Haight.

And finally, two older ladies were skipping town to “get as far away from family as possible.” They were going to a beach resort in Hawaii.

Have you found any interesting blogs lately? If so, please share the wealth with the rest of us.

Pause.

December 3, 2007

The Short Fat Kid will be on hiatus through the holidays because of all the merriment I  will be making with family and friends. I’m sure I will still Twitter, Flickr, and del.icio.us so if you need a fix to get you though try my Tumblr blog (RSS Feed).

I hope you make some merriment of your own this Holiday season and thanks for reading.

My skull.

September 16, 2007

The concept of the Skull-a-Day blog is simple – a skull image everyday for a year. The skulls are made of paper, food, fire, and just about anything else you can think of.  The blog also takes submissions of skull imagery from readers. This round of submissions includes a skull photo I took and submitted.
