I have started to blog on the funk box, which is my Tumblr blog. It’s actually almost identical to what I do here (share interesting links I fond and photos I take) but the Tumblr interface is very slick and makes what I do that much easier, which means more fun time wasting links and other Internet chotchke for you.

I hope that if you followed The Short Fat Kid you will continue to follow me at my new blog (RSS or email alerts).

This awesome video of a snowy day in Boston almost makes me wish for some snow here in the DC area.

I say almost, now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to take a walk on this rare 60 degree plus day.

And every time I see how many people are out there, sitting in their houses, reading the blogs of complete strangers and cheering them on, I realize again what a strangely disconnected and oddly intimate thing a blog is.

If you’re looking for a way to surf an almost endless stream of blogs look no further than Twitter. Most of Twitter’s membership are also bloggers and with Twitter’s social networking aspect you can easily jump from one Twitter profile to the next.

• Start by picking an interesting Twitter’er like Biz, Scoble, or Darth Vader.
• Check out who the Twitter member is following by taking a gander at the “Following” widget located in the right-hand sidebar of their page (see screenshot on the right).
• Then click on one of the Twitter icons that looks interesting to you. It amazes me how much one can convey in a little tiny icon (iou beer may be my favorite).
• After clicking on an icon look at the Twitter member’s profile (again with screenshot on the right) under the “About” heading. If they have a blog/site it will be listed under “Web”.
• What I usually do is open the link in a new tab and click on another icon from that person’s Following widget. I keep skipping from one Twitter profile to the next opening blogs up as I go until I have five or so fresh new blog’s for me to peruse.

Twitter’s simple interface makes profile surfing a snap and with an average of 2,000 new Twitter members a day there is a lot of potential blogs to discover.

The Guardian ran a competition asking kid’s to invent their own creatures and posted the resulting illustrations online. They are all awesome, but my favorite may be the Hairgobbler …

It is 25mm long. It is very hairy. This creature flies around, landing on middle-aged men’s heads. It crawls around to either the forehead or the crown, then uses the pincer on its tail to pull out the hairs. Then it eats all the hairs up! And this is the reason men go bald.

So that’s what’s happening to my hair!

My mother likes to tell a story of how when I was a little boy I got a popcorn kernel stuck in my nose. I was shoving them up there and then doing snot rockets to shoot them across the room. I shoved one way up my nostril and my normal snot rocket procedure wasn’t working to blow it out. I immediately started freaking out with visions of corn stalks growing out of my nose.

I ran and told my Mom about my predicament and she, being so flustered about yet another trip to the emergency room, smacked me upside the head. This blow, combined with renewed mucus from the water works that had started, jarred the popcorn kernel loose.

Well today I received a call from my wife that started with the sentence any proud father loves to hear: Do you know what your son did?

I soon learned that he stuck play-doh up his nose and my wife had to grapple with him to get it out. Having heard my Mother tell the popcorn kernel story many o’ time my wife uttered the following statement upon first learning of my son’s deed: You are just like your father.

Yes, yes he is.
